Then, the Greek government has made mistakes and for quite a while the greek public finances were not sound, the EU knew it, the Commission knew it and every government too, nothing new there. The wider financial crisis has just helped the unsustainable to become really unsustainable and will do so for the foreseeable future for any country not willing to accept that some conservative views make sense and are more than just some political stands for " right winger loons".
Yes the Greek people will pay for the mistakes made and it should be so. To be a citizen anywhere in the world means to be responsible for what your leaders do at least in democracies. Have we seen some huge demonstrations in Greece to protest the big gov big spending? Have we seen some huge demonstrations to protest the growing deficits and debts through the recent years threatening the financial future of the country and end in big cuts of all social spendings?
To all of the above the answer is no. If so, unless told Greece is not a democracy, every single Greek citizen knew or should have known something very unpleasant was on the way soon or later when receiving the bill for all that spending the country couldn't afford.
Don't give me the usual crap about banks, the Greek citizens didn't elect banks to run their country, it isn't banks that decided to run deficits and accumulate debts in the Greek public finances, it isn't banks that made some wrong choices of policies that led to increase the financial disorder, did they?
Speculators weren't there either to make these decisions, they are the result not the cause. Reckless spending is the cause.
Now, to be absolutly honest, the delayed reaction of the Commission to act and set a bailout at a mandatory significant cost for the Greeks to both discourage further speculation and reduce the potential number of more bailouts show a lack of professionalism.
The EU taxpayer cannot and will not be hostage of some crazy spendings done irresponsibly. Those who ordered the meal and those who benefited from it get the bill.
