Europe’s Deficits: Week in Review
Europe’s budget deficits lead a review of the week’s top stories as the region’s economy risks decoupling from the global recovery. The most-read story of the week was Harvard University Professor Kenneth Rogoff’s prediction of sovereign defaults and “painful” austerity.

Britain steps firmly out of recession as growth is revised up to 0.3%
Britain emerged from recession more strongly than previously estimated in the fourth quarter of last year, figures showed today, but data also revealed that the downturn was deeper than initial forecasts suggested.

Comments :
For 2010 as a whole, GDP growth is projected to return to positive territory, with an annual rate of 1.2%. Temporary factors, such as the inventory cycle and the effects of stimulus measures, at play at the end of 2009 are set to last in the first quarter. From the second quarter onwards, activity is projected to slow down. Private consumption will suffer from muted increases in purchasing power and the expiry of the car-scrapping premium. In addition, the uncertain demand outlook, the underutilisation of production capacities, the widespread declines in profits and the need for firms to strengthen their balance sheets, do not bode well for corporate investment. With the export market share of France in global trade declining, the growth impetus from exports is expected to remain lacklustre.

(writing in french for you knowing right of man isn't something easily understandable for someone alien to the concept)
You gonna love that one :
The New York-based firm consulted European Union regulators when it arranged the swaps in 2000 and 2001, he said. Eurostat officials said last week they only recently became aware of the contracts. Goldman Sachs was “by no means the only bank involved” in arranging the contracts, Corrigan said.
What banks?
I liked the clip. Sometimes I do feel the hurry too but it won't happen, you can't erase in minds hundreds years of intellectual slavery and immediate economic domination. Does it heal (hoelan) frustration? Not quite but I guess it can restore hope for the youth that can witness their elders haven't given up the Land and the fight.
So it is useful though it won't stand without the writings. I do wait for 1000 Lives for a Land. I can't say I'm a fan of the socialist thing.... (:-), as it is this ideology that justifies what they do to the Corsicans, what they have done to Breizh and elsewhere... I guess it is part of the heritage from the fight against the "franquists" (right?) but there is no need of a political ideology to claim the right for a Homeland, the right to self government, to speak and teach own language and culture. How to live without the foreseeable end of that humiliating and saddened situation without the feeling to give in? I believe it can lead to the need for some violent demonstration to establish the dream hasn't died regardless of the growing disconnect with a People forced into a mental submission to survive at least economically and nowdays socially, the political pressure to deny any form of rights for the small nations being the ultimate goal for the regime?
Writings forced into reality the living dream, weaponise the People and when good enough create frustration on the other side watching their inability to beat the spirit of a battered nation still standing?
Laugh at them again and again, they're gross and filthy, their only strength is the feeling of victory over the spirit, take it away from them, you'll see they're nothing, they have lost everything and have no good reason to fight for a Land that isn't theirs when the day comes.

Will Goldman also be held responsible for that delightful piece?
When the European Union predicted in 1997 that Italy’s budget deficit would exceed the threshold to qualify for the single currency, it buried in the fine print the observation that with “additional measures” the Italians could pass.
They did, thanks to a one-time tax and a yen-denominated swap. It was an early example of the balance-sheet fiddling deployed since then by countries eager to share the benefits of a $13-trillion market and lower borrowing costs, yet unwilling to cede control over their budgets, wages and welfare systems.

Henry Adams History of the United States During the Administrations of Jefferson (1801–1809)
With a cast of characters including Aaron Burr, Napoleon Bonaparte, Albert Gallatin, John Randolph, Toussaint L'Ouverture, and the complex, brilliantly delineated character of Thomas Jefferson, the first volume is unrivaled in its handling of diplomatic intrigue and political factionalism. Upon assuming office, Jefferson discovers that his optimistic laissez-faire principles—designed to prevent American government from becoming a militaristic European "tyranny"—clash with the realities of European war and American security. The party of small government presides over the Louisiana Purchase, the most extensive use of executive power the country has yet seen. Jefferson's embargo—a high-minded effort at peaceable coercion—breeds corruption and smuggling, and the former defender of states' rights is forced to use federal power to suppress them. The passion for peace and liberty pushes the country toward war.
Goldman, Italy, France, Spain, Greece, les swaps (evil stuff) ? Qui, quand pourquoi?
Qui a utilisé les swaps? La France, non quelle horreur?
Pourtant.....
Sorry, it is an English thing.
Thoreau is the first philosopher I know of to use the term, "human rights",
The term natural rights eventually fell into disfavor, but the concept of universal rights took root. Philosophers such as Thomas Paine, John Stuart Mill, and Henry David Thoreau expanded the concept. Thoreau is the first philosopher I know of to use the term, "human rights", and does so in his treatise, Civil Disobedience. This work has been extremely influential on individuals as different as Leo Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King. Gandhi and King, in particular, developed their ideas on non-violent resistance to unethical government actions from this work.
The concept of human rights has existed under several names in European thought for many centuries, at least since the time of King John of England. After the king violated a number of ancient laws and customs by which England had been governed, his subjects forced him to sign the Magna Carta, or Great Charter, which enumerates a number of what later came to be thought of as human rights. Among them were the right of the church to be free from governmental interference, the rights of all free citizens to own and inherit property and be free from excessive taxes. It established the right of widows who owned property to choose not to remarry, and established principles of due process and equality before the law. It also contained provisions forbidding bribery and official misconduct.
Other early proponents of human rights were English philosopher John Stuart Mill, in his Essay on Liberty, and American political theorist Thomas Paine in his essay, The Rights of Man.

Greece's 2001 deal to swap some of its debt using currency derivatives was in line with what other euro-zone countries were doing, Yiannos Papantoniou, the country's finance and economy minister when the deal was made, told CNBC.com Wednesday.
...../........Italy, France and Spain were among the euro zone members doing such swaps at the time, he added. Eurostat, the European Union's statistics office, has asked Greece for explanations on these debt swaps by Feb. 19.

Mission Impossible : Mrs Penchard, a Cabinet member, involved in a tense campaign to represent a constituancy could only end in tears and it does.
Very unfair treatment reserved to a lady Mrs Penchard, a cabinet member of the Sarkosy's administration.
The political system allows, encourages cabinet members to be elected and of course it is a disaster. The conflict of interests is permament and most of the time ignored as long as it doesn't make any noise. Nevertheless, Mrs Penchard was caught with a speech delivered to the small contituancy she is running to represent telling the crowd she'll fought harder for them than she may do for others, the least you can do for your constituents, bad luck, a news crew was around. Not the kind of partisanship you expect from a cabinet member....
Hypocrisy is the rule, you can represent your contituent's interests but don't mention it...
It should be ended, no cabinet members should be representing any interests, they should be serving the administration.
Are Mrs Penchard's words a reason good enough to ask for her resignation? I'd say no for now looking for what lead to the controversial speech. Asking for her to resign or be sacked seems to be based on she can't behave differently from the "secret thoughts at her heart" she has admited speaking to the constituency she is running to represent. It is to admit she can be reduced to the constituency she belongs to and can't be a cabinet member when should be questionned her participation in the race leading to the situation being the cause for some controversial words opposed to a deliberate choice or a sense of belonging?
I have listened to the lady. I can't say I'm happy with what I heard. I wished she had come forward to declare she had made a mistake and regret any offense caused announcing she had decided to withdraw from a race obviously partisan and contrary to her mission as a cabinet member serving the People or that she had decided to quit her job as a cabinet member when entering the race but was asked to delay the communication to avoid any media controversy just before a row of local elections.
The day you guys start to think outside the box and watch yourself... you'll find out you don't look good?
If adding the ethnic programs run to maintain Corsicans, Basques, Breizh and other small nations under employed and most of the time not employed at all... to sach them from their homeland, it looks dirtier and dirtier.
Should Cabinet members be elected anywhere?
I guess no? At least just to make sure they don't have to entertain some kind of confusion when they speak out regarding the interests they represent?
Interesting follow up, Greece
The swap enabled Greece to improve its budget and deficit and meet a target needed to remain within the region’s single currency. Knowledge of their existence may have changed investors’ perception of the risk associated with Greece, and the price they may have been willing to pay for the country’s securities.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=asBNXSLtlN9E&pos=2At least the securities sale issue if there is one is a much better case. "It doesn't let Goldman off the hook"....
What is the interest for a big name to fool investors they regularly deal with? To knowingly compromise its reputation when dealing with government and non governement organisations through the entire world with just a one time coup?
Can really someone imagine the conversassion "I'm a Greek elected official and I have a plan, first, ruin my country, second, cheat the EU, third, fool as many Greek bond's investors as possible, can Goldman do something for me and what are the price of your services?"

Adopt Trespass Laws!
Violation € 5000.00 min. does the job. No kidding it does work.
Tort Law originated in England with the action of trespass. Initially trespass was any wrongful conduct directly causing injury or loss; in modern law trespass is an unauthorized entry upon land. A trespass gives the aggrieved party the right to bring a civil lawsuit and collect damages as compensation for the interference and for any harm suffered. Trespass is an intentional tort and, in some circumstances, can be punished as a crime.
It applies to any private property (bars, restaurants, clubs, anything for inappropriate behaviour) and remain in the premises after the landlord has requested you leave will lead to you ending in jail first and later in court for prosecution paying a hefty amount of money for the trouble.

Speculation - Greek Bonds, Goldman and JP Morgan. Dubious assertions ill-motivated.
It stinks totalitarian stuff...

Greek Financial Crisis - Stop, please, to patronise the Greeks!
The show is absolutly ridiculous. I mean, really, do you think Greece has waited for the EU to be a country?
Then, the Greek government has made mistakes and for quite a while the greek public finances were not sound, the EU knew it, the Commission knew it and every government too, nothing new there. The wider financial crisis has just helped the unsustainable to become really unsustainable and will do so for the foreseeable future for any country not willing to accept that some conservative views make sense and are more than just some political stands for " right winger loons".
Yes the Greek people will pay for the mistakes made and it should be so. To be a citizen anywhere in the world means to be responsible for what your leaders do at least in democracies. Have we seen some huge demonstrations in Greece to protest the big gov big spending? Have we seen some huge demonstrations to protest the growing deficits and debts through the recent years threatening the financial future of the country and end in big cuts of all social spendings?
To all of the above the answer is no. If so, unless told Greece is not a democracy, every single Greek citizen knew or should have known something very unpleasant was on the way soon or later when receiving the bill for all that spending the country couldn't afford.
Don't give me the usual crap about banks, the Greek citizens didn't elect banks to run their country, it isn't banks that decided to run deficits and accumulate debts in the Greek public finances, it isn't banks that made some wrong choices of policies that led to increase the financial disorder, did they?
Speculators weren't there either to make these decisions, they are the result not the cause. Reckless spending is the cause.
Now, to be absolutly honest, the delayed reaction of the Commission to act and set a bailout at a mandatory significant cost for the Greeks to both discourage further speculation and reduce the potential number of more bailouts show a lack of professionalism.
The EU taxpayer cannot and will not be hostage of some crazy spendings done irresponsibly. Those who ordered the meal and those who benefited from it get the bill.

Very bad answers. Altogether, I noted some very poor thinking efforts.
Was it right wing offensive language? Was it a Republican stand? or both?
Very bad answers. Altogether, I noted some very poor thinking efforts.
No it isn't a Republican stand because you decide the rethoric tone belongs to the so called offensice right wing which is just how you qualify it. But yes it is a Republican stand because it denounces a big government tendancy to introduce at the tax payer's expense some welfare measures to hide its lack of success to organise and provide a sound economy offering enough opportunities to insure to as many as possible an access to the housing they wish or can afford.
The easy way to make sure nothing will be done to address the causes of a situation while giving the impression the politicians involved in a big government political system are doing something.
Is it both?
I'll be waiting for some better efforts on your side at least to prove yourself you can think independantly.

You know what, I was amased with your reaction, may be surprised and truly I don't know what think about it. I don't know if it reflects your state of miond or if it's just a convenient reaction to avoid looking further for solutions and causes to a quite sad result.
May I ask the following, what did you really expect from people "you", I say you cause it's easier but you'll understand, won't you?, have been bashing for decades, more or less a century, their faith, took away their languages, their cultures, their music and songs, their traditions, have bared anyone of them willing to work with his, her own language to create and probably allow progress to go on and reinforce pride, then abused, promising social and economic progress you never delivered?
You took away from them every single thing everybody more or less worldwide cherish, celebrate and often use as a shelter in difficult times. You fed them with that ugly "french political nationalism". You taught them it is okay to show disrespect for faiths doing it for theirs. You taught them it's okay to show disrespect for minorities languages and cultures doing it, encouraging sometime the bashing by "the majority" when one of these small nations showed some reluctance to give up. You took them on that "french only" journey asking them to leave everything behind. They already had lost a lot and now you're telling them what we gave you to replace what we took away isn't in fact yours?
Are you really surprised they may appear like haters?
Now let's be honest, you have received a countless number of hateful emails or posts on the paper blogs but I and you should know, a proportion of at least 95% aren't true haters... they're just angry people, feeling cheated, it doesn't mean they should be writing or saying these things but whose fault is it if for a countless number of years they hadn't have a voice and so far it seems nobody is willing to do something to feed that anger with something more positive.

Travelling the world, you find out that most people don't have stated rights but have some very clearly defined duties imposed on them in various names running from religion to political ideologies or through some very questionnable moral interpretation of undefined fashionable attitudes and postures.
No such things, Freedom reigns and the Bill of Rights entails all the duties a suitable society can expect from its citizens.
I know but that's what crossed my mind at first. Can offer a better one now. "I doubt he's a good christian" or "He isn't a good christian, is he?" think it's closer to the idea behind the french thing (ie)"Il a pas l'air très catholique" as it questions eventually more a moral attitude, a set of values based on catholic christianity rather than the appearance, "doesn't look like a catholic" a more word by word translation. Does it suits you better?

A new section, after P&P owed to Bill, comes Culture with a first question.
Why is America such a special place so lively and creative?
What did the Founding Fathers give the People, to create from undesired, often hated and poor people fleeing their "homeland" an extraordinary nation?
Have you ever asked yourself how?

P&P, we have a new entry and a great one!
Welcome Mr Couderc to the PINHEAD Hall of Fame, you're my pick and let me tell you we haven't had one of that tremendous significance for quite a while.
The story ; All people involved being french politicians to set the tone. What happened today?
Mr Couderc said today he wants a law (no less) to silence a political rival Mr Freche in a soon to be local election on a territory under the paris regime administration, Mr Freche being guilty of recently telling a newspaper, Mr Fabius didn't look very catholic(ie may be not very honest referring to the period of France was a all catholic country?) and previously to have accused publicly a group of people from the "Harkis" community of being an under category of humans for helping out some politicians who had sold out their parents to the Algerian authorities during the war with France. The law Mr Couderc wishes aimed at make sure next time Mr Freche could be condemned and silenced. It is very unclear that in both cases, racial slurs were used but Mr Freche has now been a controversial figure of french politics for quite a while but remains popular with his constituants what the paris authorities don't like.
Getting it?
Who are the "Harkis"?
The only french citizens (among the people born out of the territories currently under the paris regime administration) who earned their citizenship with their blood serving in the french army during the war between Algeria and France. They should have been loved, treated like king and never called again after the war end "Harkis" as in Algerian terms it is an insult and among the worse ones you can think of. Nevertheless, they are still called like that today, pretty much mistreated and you have Mr Couderc asking for a law in their name calling them the name to end eventually Mr Freche from doing it again or anybody else.
Mr Couderc is a Pinhead.

See, it's arrogant, nasty, just horrible. I'd say, Come on you don't have to scream, take your time, seat down, think it over and speak gently, you'll make your point much better through the quality of your arguments. Your misbehaviour won't hide you didn't do your homework it's just adding to it, you know.

Did he just speak out his mind and heart genuinely, candidly with a journalist about an old time political rival with the wrong words and inadvertendly heart an entire community's feeling?
Or has he been suffocating over an extended period of time under the "state official cultural equality blanket of petty and complicated rules" of which he feels the two more important communities of the area, Catalans and Occitans, specially their language are excluded, and used intentionally some words about his old political rival he knew would sparkle a controversy?
Or was it a political will statement targeting at large an entire community? With what you have been reading about the first Amend, you already know there is never in such a case an easy ready made answer. Only a straight forward meaningful conversassion as respectful as possible can enlight that type of controversy and while never infridge the right to speak out, the debate can help the largest section of the public understand the nature of the feelings expressed and the feelings ressented, helping at large most of the society to improve the overall mutual understanding.
